taking the next step

British Triathlon are very keen to promote the sport of triathlon to young people. To build skills and confidence they hold a number of 'skills schools' to encourage youngsters to build their skills and, experience different coaching styles and activities.

British Triathlon Junior / Youth Talent Pathway / Progression

The national Talent Pathway helps prepare promising triathletes for success at the highest levels, providing a gateway onto the British Triathlon Performance Pathway.

Triathlon England, Triathlon Scotland and Welsh Triathlon offer Talent Academies. The academies are led by a Head Coach who works with national staff to deliver a programme of support to the best youth and junior triathletes in their region. There are specific selection criteria to be selected for the academies. Find out more here.

Regions within England also have Talent Academies and also Development Squads. Long Eaton falls within the East Midlands Regional Academy which holds selection trials regularly for budding talented athletes. For more info click here.

Sitting under the East Midlands Regional Academy is the Derbyshire Triathlon Academy  based in Derby at the Woodlands School. Sessions cost £20 and usually take most of the day one Sunday in a month. The academy is run by BTF Level 3 coaches Hilary Johnson and Stephen Greene with the aim of enhancing and building on skills learnt in the clubs in Derbyshire / East Midlands and training with those of a similar high standard. Juniors should be between 12 – 16 years old and must be able to swim 100 m in 2.15 mins and run 800m in 3.30 mins.
